The Legacy of Ann Hulan: A Newfoundland Pioneer
When Ann Hulan was a young child, her family settled in Bay St. George South in an area once known as the Barrisways. They were the very first settlers on the island’s remote and rugged west coast. This is the biography of a Newfoundland pioneer woman, whose accomplishments in life bear the mark of greatness. Ann married John Hulan in 1771 and they raised 10 children at Middle Barachois (now McKay’s). After John was lost at sea in 1811, Ann continued to develop the family business interests. Famous visitors to the area were greatly impressed with her and wrote glowing accounts of her accomplishments. Notably, she was an experimental agriculturalist, who established the first farm on the island’s west coast. As the owner of the schooner, Industry, Ann carried on a successful salmon and fur export business. During the War of 1812, she was on board her schooner when it was captured by American privateers and she was held captive for four months. She would live for thirty-six years following her ordeal and continued to develop her legacy. This biography, written by a descendant, honours her memory as a true Newfoundland pioneer, whose accomplishments and forward thinking laid down a solid foundation for future generations to thrive in Bay St. George South.
